ABOUT J. LAURITZEN

Lauritzen was initially started as a timber merchant trade company in 1884. Through the years they’ve evolved and entered several industries and businesses. In 1951, they entered the tanker business, and in 1973 they entered the bulk carrier business. Since then, their bulking activities have evolved into Lauritzen Bulkers, J. Lauritzen’s largest business area. In 2011, Lauritzen Bulkers received the “Bulk ship operator of the year” award at the International Bulk Journals’ award ceremony.

Lauritzen Bulkers is made up of approximately 100 vessels, and 70 employees located all around the world. J. Lauritzen’s main headquarters are in Copenhagen, Denmark, and there are four more offices located in Singapore, Dubai, Hong Kong, and the United States.

Since 1884, J. Lauritzen has enabled global trade through intelligent seaborne solutions. For them to facilitate global trade in this high volume email environment, they need to be internally organized, and connected to the world with a powerful email solution like MARK5.

THE PROBLEM

Limited Email Capabilities | Overloaded Inboxes

Back in 2015, J. Lauritzen started to become frustrated with the limited capabilities of the traditional email services they were using. They noticed that the system was unable to support their fleet and that there was no further development of the system to make improvements. 

Before discovering MARK5 from Nordic IT, J. Lauritzen employees found themselves having to dig through and read far too many emails, and were ultimately wasting productive work time. The bulk tanker business is a high-volume email environment that requires constant communication and clear visibility, which traditional email services were unable to provide. The lack of categories, folders, and filters made it difficult to manage the thousands of emails they received every day.

THE SEARCH FOR AN EMAIL SOLUTION

After many years in the business, J. Lauritzen became tired of the inefficiencies their older email system had caused, so they began to look for a stronger, better, and faster email solution. J. Lauritzen contacted different suppliers, so MARK5 and Nordic IT were competing against a few other maritime communication systems. The Nordic IT team was invited to conduct a couple of demonstrations to show off MARK5’s ability to manage thousands of daily emails with ease. MARK5’s ability to significantly increase team productivity, organization and visibility was the ultimate selling point for the J. Lauritzen team.

THE COMPANY ROLL-OUT

MARK5’s capabilities seem endless, and there are plenty of functions to learn that can simplify workflows and save time. To smoothen the transition, Nordic IT visited the J. Lauritzen headquarters in Copenhagen and developed all of the initial filters, folders, and categories in their MARK5 inbox which made the implementation process simple and seamless.  

Each department’s use of MARK5 is slightly different, so Nordic IT was able to adapt their training and categories to fit their specific needs. MARK5 increased teamwork, transparency, and collaboration on all of their email threads, and ultimately cut down on all of the unnecessary back and forth with simple emails every day.

HOW MARK5 IS J. LAURITZEN’S SOLUTION

With MARK5, J. Lauritzen was able to customize their entire inbox with intuitive and accessible menus. 

Categories gave them immediate and convenient access to the tools they needed every day. These customizable categories could also be used to label each email, which allowed them to reference it even quicker. MARK5’s search capabilities are as fast as you can type, so as they search for emails by ship, customer, voyage, etc., MARK5 is filtering through thousands of results in seconds.

Nordic IT also set up customized folder structures, workflows, and permissions that optimized each team’s collaboration process. From there, different users could set up more complex folder structures that would only display the folders relevant to their work.

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE FUTURE

Six years later, MARK5 has been rebranded as reMARK to create an even better user experience. The MARK5 interface has been upgraded and simplified even further to produce the ultimate collaborative email software for maritime teams.

Now that J. Lauritzen has some Super Users within the company, we are looking forward to upgrading them to reMARK soon.
